Ylateau: The book “Cosmicomics” by Italo Calvino is often described as a cosmic allegory, while dissolving various literary genres in an undefined manner. One of its stories, “Without Colors”, is set in the primal time of planets before color and language exist. It explores the first encounter, recognition, and perception flow of two beings, as they innocently explore their interactive chemistry and the outer world. The planet transforms from a uniform grayness into a colorful spectacle. What is beautiful to one soul may not be so to another. For me, it’s more than one way to perceive it just as a romantic story. The Manas (分别心, Sanskrit: मनस), a notion in Buddhist Yogacara that explains the lens of human consciousness, observes the world, and generates recognition, can be seen a metaphorical process from the story. While Manas and intelligence awaken, bringing forth infinite colors and joys, it is also the origin where all afflictions start.
